JIC may have started life in the early 1930s as ‘Établissement Charles Jeanmot’, and then, sometime between 1936 and 1942, Charles Jeanmot died, and it became ‘Établissement Veuve Charles Jeanmot’ which might roughly translate as ‘the establishment of the widow of Charles Jeanmot’. By 1949 it may have changed its name again, possibly becoming ‘Societé JIC-Champion’. It seems likely that the J in JIC is for Jeanmot. JIC not only liked to change its company name with alarming regularity - it also seemed to relish the fine French tradition (see Simplex) of calling the same product different names at different times for no apparent reason.

The company was based in Puteaux, a suburb North West of Paris, not a million miles from Nanterre, the home of Huret. By 1949 its various lines of business included manufacturing derailleurs, racing frames, wing nuts and home-trainers.

My fascination with JIC starts with the parallelogram design featured in Charles Jeanmot’s 1936 patent and continues with Germaine Jeanmot’s 1942 patent and 1946 patent for more sophisticated and refined parallelogram designs. These are amongst the earliest truly ‘modern’ derailleurs designs that I am aware of.

JIC appears to have also manufactured derailleurs for Super-Inax.
