Campagnolo's 2013 80th Anniverary derailleur was born into a very different world from their iconic 1983 50th Anniversary model. Back in 1983, Campagnolo derailleurs had won 8 of the last 10 Tours de France, with the other two won using Simplex equipment - and Simplex was in terminal decline - enjoying the first of a series of financial crises in 1985.

Jump forward to 2013 and riders using Campagnolo derailleurs had won only one of the the last 10 Tours de France, with a dominant Shimano being challenged by an up-and-coming SRAM. Many commentators did not even rate Campagnolo as being at the game.

Despite this, the Campagnolo 80th Anniverary derailleur is a technical tour de force. With extensive use of carbon fibre, and titanium here, there, and everywhere. You can't sneer at an 11 speed derailleur that weighs in at 160g.

I did have my gripes with it - it is not a lovely thing to hold in your hand (carbon does not give a perfect silky finish) - and, to my eye, it looks ugly (think Black Hawk helicopter rather than Rolex watch). It's more of a high performance, technical, tool and less of a gift for a pontiff...

... but the legend in the burgeoning classic-bike-parts trade is that 80th Anniversary groupsets command higher prices than 50th Anniversary ones.
