Zeus 2000 black (2nd style)

Zeus 2000 black derailleur (2nd style) main image

In the mid-1970’s Zeus was caught in a pincer movement between, on the one hand, the Campagnolo raising the game with the 1973 Campagnolo Super Record, and on the other hand Triplex making cheap aluminium Campagnolo copies. Time was running out for Zeus’s policy of slavishly copying old Campagnolo models.

Zeus’s response was the 2000 groupset - a genuine attempt to make the very best components in the world - and this is the Zeus 2000 derailleur from that groupset.

It is basically a Campagnolo Nuovo Record, but it has a titanium hanger bolt, highly cut away steel knuckles and (new for 1979) aluminium parallelogram cage plates. It also picks up a core design theme from the 2000 groupset with its multiplicity of drill holes.

Although Zeus repeatedly claimed that the Zeus 2000 was lighter than the Campagnolo Super Record, this rather alluring black example weighs in 6g heavier at 190g. Despite this, at the time I wanted one for its cool, black drilled out look.
