This patent describes many elements of the Maruishi Electric Lever, a top tube mounted mechanical gear lever that could also be electrically controlled from a switch on the handlebars.

The production Maruishi Electric Lever had a push button switch on the handlebars and could only shift electrically from high gears to low gears. I am unclear what type of handlebar switch is described in this patent and if it is expected to be able to electrically shift both up and down the freewheel.
