This advert is the earliest evidence that I have for the existence of the Terrot 6 speed transmission - a 3 speed Terrot Modèle H rear derailleur system combined with a double chainwheel.

I think the front change was, at this stage, a matter of moving the chain by hand (or by foot). As recently as the 1970s I had conversations with curmudgeonly old geezers who thought that front derailleurs were unreliable gewgaws suitable only for the lily-livered, and that real men did the business by reaching down and hooking the chain across with a carefully bent spoke.
