The indefatigable Gaston Clément reports on La Semaine d’Auvergne, a week of reliability trials held on the 1,464m Puy de Dôme and the 1,589m Pas de Peyrol on the Puy Mary. The week ran from the 2nd to the 9th of July 1922 (a nice warm time of year for a bracing climb) and included a mere 660km of cycling with a total height climbed of a piffling 9,000m. For scale, Mount Everest is 8,848m high.
There were 44 participants and an impressive 40 finishers. The participating machines were:
- Three Audouard solo models fitted with a 2 X 4 speed Audouard derailleur transmission.
- Five Le Chemineau solo models fitted with a 2 X 3 speed Le Chemineau derailleur transmission.
- Two Le Chemineau tandems fitted with a 2 X 3 speed Le Chemineau derailleur transmission. The riders of one tandem are referred to as ‘Joanny’ - and are probably Joanny Panel and partner.
- Two Desvages solo models fitted with a 2 X 3 speed Le Chemineau derailleur transmission. One of these was ridden by the only female participant.
- Six Kéops solo models fitted with a 3 X 2 speed L’As derailleur transmission. This is a triple chainset and two speed freewheel set up.
- One Royal-Fabric solo model fitted with a 3 speed Le Chemineau derailleur transmission. This was a super-lightweight bicycle that recorded the fastest time by some margin.
- Seven RPF solo models fitted with a 2 X 2 speed L’As derailleur transmission. Two of the riders are referred to as ‘Bouillier’ and ‘Raimond’, and are probably Claudius Bouillier and Albert Raimond.
- Two RPF solo models fitted with a 2 X 4 speed Audouard derailleur transmission.
- One Terrot solo model fitted with a 4 speed Terrot Modèle HT derailleur transmission.
- Five Automoto solo models fitted with a 3 speed expanding (or geared?) chainwheel.
- Three Erpelding solo models fitted with an unspecified transmission involving a triple chainset.
- Two Hirondelle solo models fitted with a 2 X 3 speed transmission combining a retro-direct system with a Hirondelle 3 speed hub gear.
- One Hirondelle solo model fitted with a 2 speed retro-direct transmission.
- Two Magnat-Debon solo models fitted with their signature three speed gear box at the chainwheel.
- One Thomann solo model fitted with a 3 speed Sturmey-Archer hub gear.
- One Toutain solo model fitted with a 3 speed BSA hub gear.
A rich and varied buffet of technologies.
