This is a well used example of a Super Champion OE Course. Some of its features are shared with the Super Champion Super Mondial (3rd style) in this collection:

• The hole for the dropout bolt is keyhole shaped to accept one of Super Champion's distinctive shaped dropout bolt and nut arrangements that allow a modicum of rotation.
• The pulley cage is 47mm long.
• The outer pulley cage plate is made of some kind of white metal that oxidises to a dull grey.
• The inner pulley cage plate is thin steel and is shaped so that the pulley bolt nuts are recessed.
• The pulley bolts have domed heads and mount from the outside inwards.

but some are brand, spanking, new:

• the elegant bell-crank like operating mechanism
• the top normal logic
• the, rather refined, black detailing

The Super Champion OE Course was strikingly more sophisticated than the, then best selling, Simplex Tour de France. But the Simplex was cheap and everywhere - including being fitted on the bikes of the leading Tour de France stars. Regretably, Super Champion's time had passed.

Two further points:

• The 'OE' in the model name stands for 'Oscar Egg' - the legendary rider who owned Super Champion
• The letter 'E' in the 'OE' of this example is misshapen. You can see exactly the same misshapen 'E' in the example photographed in New Cycling magazine in 1981.
