In 2012 SRAM redesigned its Red derailleurs to have a new, more dynamic, speedier look. Amazingly these new derailleurs were even lighter than the original. This is a surprisingly rare outcome of a restyle.
The new look covered the usual SRAM plethora of mechanical changers, each differing slightly for the other:
- Initially, in 2012, the new derailleur was a 10-speed model designated SRAM Red (RED-B1). It was available with two lengths of cage; 'short' or 'WiFLi' (which stands for 'Wider, Faster, Lighter' and is sometimes, more prosaically, described as 'medium'). The WiFLi version also had a slightly altered b-knuckle which allowed a maximum sprocket size of 32 teeth. Both versions had 'SRAM' in large letters on its outer pulley cage plate, accompanied by a red flash.
- In the 2012 Tour de France, Peter Sagan won the first of his seven Green Jerseys, riding a Cannondale equiped with a SRAM Red (RED-B1). In celebration SRAM launched the SRAM Red Green Edition (RED-B1). This still had 'SRAM' in large letters on its outer pulley cage plate, but it was now accompanied by a green flash.
- In 2013 an additional 11-speed model was added. This was called the SRAM Red 22 (RED-C1). It was offered with the same pulley cage length and b-knuckle options as the SRAM Red (RED-B1). It also had the same outer pulley cage graphics (including the red flash), with the caveat that a small '22' was sneaked into one corner.
- In the 2013 Tour de France, Peter Sagan won the second of his seven Green Jerseys, riding a Cannondale equiped with a SRAM Red 22 (RED-C1). It won't surprise you to learn that SRAM launched the SRAM Red 22 Green Edition (RED-C1). Again the red flash on the outer pulley cage plate was replaced by a green one.
- In 2016 the Red 22 was restyled to become the SRAM Red 22 (RED-C2). Again it was available in two pulley cage lengths asnd with two different b-knuckles. The change was that the letters 'SRAM' on the outer pulley cage plate were in a much smaller font. This matched the graphic treatment of the brand, spanking, new electronic SRAM Red eTap (RED-E-A1).
This is a very nice example of a SRAM Red 22 Green Edition (RED-C1) with a short pulley cage. It celebrates Peter Sagan's victory in the Green Jersey competition oif the 2013 Tour de France.
It also weighs a stunning 144g. As increasing numbers of high-end derailleurs become electronic it may be some time before we see these low, low weights again. Which makes me a touch sad.
