DISRAELI GEARS

Shimano Falcon (AD2)

Shimano Falcon main image

In all of Shimano's history, the Falcon may rank as its weirdest derailleur. It's a 2-speed contraption, with no lever or cable, that is operated by pedalling backwards. It was supplied as a kit with a 14-19T 2-speed freewheel.

I have never dared to install this example on a bike, but the one person who I have met who has used a Shimano Falcon seemed impressed with the way it changed.

The late 1960s and early 1970s were an inventive time at Shimano. They not only produced this Falcon derailleur, they also offered an automatic 2-speed hub gear and the incomprehensible 'Automatic 5' derailleur system. As an aside, it is often forgotten that, at the time, their range also included both cable-operated and hydraulic disc brakes.
