This rather fine postcard features an elderly Vélocio (Paul de Vivie) and one of his typical bikes. Note the small wheels, chubby tyres, lack of front derailleur and the Le Cyclo rear derailleur. Vélocio’s use of the Le Cyclo would have infuriated Joanny Panel of Le Chemineau - who saw himself as Vélocio’s sole and rightful heir.

If you have to have an epitaph, you can do worse than ‘Père du Cyclotourisme’.
