New Cycling April 1965 - Shimano advert (2nd style)

This is another advert for the vaguely mysterious Shimano Sportsman derailleur. It also seems to celebrate the production of the 100,000th of something - but I have no real idea what.

As I have commented on §£the brother advert, the Shimano Sportsman is a fairly blatant copy of the Campagnolo Sportman (note the lack of an ‘s’), with the only substantive differences being:

  • The placement of the adjustment screws.
  • The rather attractive and quixotic points on the pulley cage.
  • The lack of a spelling error in the name.

The Shimano Sportsman appears to be very similar to the, early 1965, Shimano 3.3.3. in this collection, with the main difference being the name. It seems that Shimano may have had to abandon the Sportsman name because it was too similar to Campagnolo’s model name.
