Laurent Brochard, French, 1968 -
What do we remember about Laurent Brochard? Probably three things, that he was World Road Race Champion in 1997, that he had one of the great hairstyles of modern cycling history and that, riding as a super-domestique for Richard Virenque, he was caught up in the Festina doping scandal at the 1998 Tour de France.
A less remembered fact about Laurent Brochard is that he won that most fragrant of races, the Paris-Camembert, a remarkable three times. He is the only person to have achieved this cheesy feat.
The Festina team postcard shown here features Laurent in 1995, when he was riding a Shimano Dura-Ace 7402 derailleur. I believe that he won his Worlds title in 1997 using the then new Shimano Dura-Ace 7700.
