Funiculo derailleurs were produced by Jacques-Gustave Schulz in La Garenne-Colombes, a mere stone’s throw from Nanterre and Puteaux, the heartland of the bicycle industry in Paris. Monsieur Shulz fitted his derailleurs on his distinctive bicycles.

The first Funiculo system, introduced in 1932 was a three speed system that was offered with a 16, 24, 40T freewheel. In 1934 this was improved to become a 4 speed system with a 16, 20, 28, 40T freewheel. The Funiculos were able to handle the huge 40 tooth sprocket due to their multi-pivot design that had some similarities, in intent at least, to the Huret Duopar (designed 40 years later in nearby Nanterre). Like the Duopar, the Funiculo could take up a vast length of chain while maintaining a small chain gap.
