DISRAELI DOCUMENTS
L'Œuvre was an independant left-wing daily newspaper published in Paris from 1904 to 1946.
In the run up to the Second World War, fired by pacifism, it took a non-interventionist stand. Following the fall of France this morphed into overt collaboration with the German occupiers. Modern readers will find this chain of events rather perplexing, particularly for a left-wing publication. But it was, perhaps, not so unusual at the time. However it did lead to the closure of the newspaper (by law) in 1946.
In common with many left-wing newspapers in the early 20th century, L'Œuvre included extensive coverage of sports including cycling.
