Chris Boardman, British, 1968 -
If you have watched the coverage of the Tour de France in the UK in the last few years, you will have, inevitably, cringed at the embarrassing 'humourous' segments starring commentators Chris Boardman and Ned Boulting. If you watched the coverage of the Tour de France in the UK in the 1990s, you will have, probably, cringed at the litany of excuses Chris proffered for pulling out of the Tour, year after year.
All this TV action hasn't done a whole lot for Chris's image, at least not in our household - which is a pity as Chris Boardman has some impressive achievements. An accomplished timetriallist and pursuiter, Chris won a Gold Medal at the Barcelona Olympics, when this was an unusual thing for a British cyclist to do. He was World Time Trial Champion in 1994, held the World Hour Record and won the Tour de France prologue in 1994, 1997 and 1998.
Chris is included on this website because I believe that he won the 1993 Tour de France prologue using a MAVIC Zap (ZMS 800) electronic derailleur.
