Briek Schotte, Belgian, 1919 - 2004

Albéric 'Briek' Schotte was World Road Race Champion in 1948 and 1950. He also came second to Gino Bartali in the famous 1948 Tour de France.

Briek Schotte was a notorious hard man. He was nicknamed 'Iron Briek'. The Flandria web site refers to his 'craggy, granite-like features', his 'immense capacity for suffering', his 'no-nonsense approach to life' and his 'never-say-die attitude'. It is hard to miss their point!

Both as a quintessentially Flemish rider and then, later, as the Manager of the, quintessentially Flemish, Flandria team, Briek Schotte was one of the standout figures in the glittering history of Belgian cycling.
