Cyclo Gear Company - The Witmy

Cyclo Gear Company - The Witmy scan 01 main image

This rather handsome leaflet advertises the Cyclo Witmy - a somewhat gross and unappealing 2 speed derailleur.

I find it slightly confusing as it describes the Cyclo Gear Company Ltd as 'a firm specialising in Chain Gears for over 25 years'. I believe that the Cyclo Gear Company Ltd was incorporated on 31st July 1933 and that the Witmy might have been in production from the mid 1930s until 1939, with some stock left over into the early 1940s. None of my post-war catalogues mention the Witmy. My guess at the date of this brochure is 1938. In 1938, I think that the Cyclo Gear Company Ltd would have been 'a firm specialising in Chain Gears for over 5 years', not 25 years!

Either I can't add, or, as Kellyanne Conway might say, there are some 'alternative facts' going on here. 25 years back from 1938 would take you to 1913. The UK based Cyclo Gear Company was spawned by the French Cyclo company, and Albert Raimond, the founder of Cyclo, was claimed to have designed his initial derailleur before the First World War - so perhaps this is the basis of the claim.
