January 1891 - Peugeot advert

This advert doesn’t have anything to say about derailleurs, but it caught my interest. I liked:

  • The idea that the company was called ‘The Sons of the Peugeot Brothers’. I am used to company names like ‘Fred Bloggs and Son’, but this takes the chaotic madness that is family business to a new level..
  • The evidence that the Avenue de la Grand-Armée had already become the epicentre of Parisian bicycle retailing.
  • Tamdems (eh?).
  • Dog-Carts de Luxe. This can only be the name of a pretentious 1990s indie-band from Salford.

And when I look at the image of the Bicyclette ‘Lion’ I can’t help thinking that a seat tube might prove handy.
