The Regina Extra is a rather tidy single pulley derailleur. It is impressively simple and uses affordable steel pressings - but still manages to convey an air of strength and precision.

I have found it difficult to date the Regina Extra, and have not yet managed to find it listed in any Regina catalogues. Mass produced single pulley derailleurs first appeared in the 1930s but remained a staple on Italian utility bikes right up to the early 1970s. Based on very little, my guess is that it dates from some time around 1950.

I have three of these derailleurs in this collection - and each displays slight differences from the others. This may indicate that this basic design was produced over a number of years.

This is a slightly rusty example with the following features:

• The main arm has a single straight reinforcing ridge pressed into it.
• The sliding cylinder is 55mm long with a 28mm long slot cut in it. Perhaps this is for a 4-speed freewheel.
• The cable adjuster has a distinctive square head.
• The cable adjuster is mounted about 5mm further down the main arm than on my other examples.
• There is a no washer at all behind the main plate, where the sliding cylinder attaches.
