Note the image of the bicycle with cantilever brakes, horribly useless brake levers and a derailleur fitted with the ‘Rosa’ flanged tension pulley. It looks perfect for riding the “unrideable” one in ten with untiring ease (some chance).
It has been suggested to me that the spooky figure in the bottom left hand corner is supposed to represent Hubert Oppermann. My guess is that this is based solely on the unchallengeable fact that if you see someone wearing the fatal combination of a navy blue blazer and light coloured shorts, they must either be on their way to a fancy dress party or - like Oppy himself - they are Australian.
