Is that the Golden Gate Bridge? Is that the Californian sunshine? Are those the beautiful people we heard so much about? Are they on bicycles?!

They certainly don’t look like the British cyclists I knew in 1976, enjoying 26% inflation, listening to the Sex Pistols in obscure (and dingy) London pubs and preparing for an obsession with Green Goddesses and the ‘Winter of Discontent’. But then hardly any of us had yet got hold of a SunTour Cyclone.

And what exactly is going on with the legs of his trousers?
