October 1967 - Barwin advert

This advert indicates that Barwin, a London-based company, imported Favorit derailleurs and Barum tyres and tubes - both from what was then communist Czechoslovakia.

It was placed in Sporting Cyclist in October 1967, three months before the election of Alexander Dubček as First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, initiating what became known as the Prague Spring. In its own, miniscule, way this advert is evidence of hopes for normalising relations with the fringes of the Soviet Empire - hopes that would soon be dashed.

Many thanks to Andy Fraser for lending me this magazine and allowing me to scan it.
