Sometime in the early 1980s Shimano temporarily broke from its tradition of producing pure exploded diagrams and under the title ‘Service Plus’ started producing ‘Technical Information’ sheets that combined the exploded diagrams that we loved so much with text and graphics explaining features and even fitting instructions.

This is the ‘Service Plus’ information for Deore XT (M700). The rear derailleur featured has the Centeron lever like the Shimano Deore XT (M700 1st style), but is described as ‘now designed to have an expanded capacity’ and is shown with three oval holes in the outer pulley cage plate and a ‘GS’ logo stamped on this plate. This is a very similar outer pulley cage plate to that on the Shimano 600 GS black (6101). In contrast my example has of the Shimano Deore XT (M700 1st style) has two oval holes in its outer pulley cage plate and no ‘GS’ logo. It’s the kind of thing that could only interest an obsessive!
