La Gauloise was the bicycle brand used by Paul de Vivie whose amazing contributions to the development of the derailleur are covered at greater length here. What little I know of ‘La Gauloise’ bicycles includes:

  • In 1882 Paul de Vivie launched a cycle manufacturing business in St-Étienne possibly called ‘La Manufacture Stéphanoise de Cycles’ and branded his bikes ‘La Gauloise’.
  • His approach to branding may have been a touch sporadic - as the literature also contains many references to ‘de Vivie’ bikes.
  • Wikipedia reports that “the Touring Club de France organised a challenge in 1902 in which a professional, Edouard Fischer, rode 200 km of hills without gears against a female rider, Marthe Hesse, riding a Gauloise with a three-speed derailleur. Hesse won.”
  • Small ads for second hand touring bikes, placed in the T.C.F Revue Mensuelle between 1903 and 1918, offer various different ‘La Gauloise’ models sporting a plethora of different gear systems. These possibly included bi-chain systems, derailleur systems and systems where you shift the chain by hand.
  • In the photo of Paul de Vivie dating from 1906 he is proudly standing beside a bi-chain bike - possibly a 4 speed with two sets of chainwheels and sprockets each side.
  • By 1908 de Vivie appears to have developed a 4 speed ‘La Gauloise’ derailleur which combined many of the elements of a modern system. It involved a cable operated tension arm, mounted with pulleys which shifted the chain sideways across a 4 speed freewhweel. With Paul de Vivie’s blessing, Joanny Panel and Claudius Bouillier developed this design into the ‘Le Chemineau’ derailleur, and patented it in 1912.
  • He was not entirely happy with his 1908 derailleur design because it was low normal. In about 1910 he produced a top normal design which he referred to as working on ‘the clothes peg principle’. I believe that this interesting design never made it into volume production. I don’t know if he referred to it as a ‘La Gauloise’ product.
  • The Musée d’Art et d’Industrie in St-Étienne has a ‘La Gauloise’ bi-chain bike with strange drop handlebars which it dates at 1922.
  • In the 1926? photo of an elderly Paul de Vivie, in this collection, he is posing with one of his signature small-wheeled, fat-tyred touring bicycles fitted with a production model of a ‘Le Cyclo’ gear made by his friend Albert Raimond.
