Jean Robic, French, 1921 - 1980
Jean Robic won the 1947 Tour de France by breaking with tradition and attacking on the final stage. I think that he used a Simplex Champion du Monde derailleur in this Tour.
He was an unlikely winner - pilloried for his diminutive size, huge ears and for always wearing a leather crash hat (after breaking his skull in a crash in 1944). However, in this ‘film noir’ style postcard, he looks particularly suave, sipping his St Raphael brandy like an impish version of Humphrey Bogart.
