This rather pleasant handbook features the Hercules Herailleur on page 13.
Among the many other pearls of wisdom that it contains the assertion that you bike “like a car, but not to the same extent, ... needs some attention if its handsome appearance and easy-running qualities are to be maintained. ... If you will devote half an hour of your leisure time every two or three weeks to ‘servicing’ your cycle, you will have the pleasure and satisfaction of owning a fine bicycle in fine condition.”
The implication that you need to devote more than half an hour a fortnight to servicing your car would amaze modern readers. Unfortunately the idea that you should spend half an hour every two weeks servicing your bike remains alarmingly true.
