I have been told that video is the key to moving your web site up those, all-important, Google rankings - so I have been scouring the culturo-sphere for derailleur related movies.

I was convinced that there surely must be some classic blockbuster with a role for the derailleur. I had high hopes for the incomparable ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ but they were cruelly dashed - it’s all about bottom bracket axles. As for the indigestible ‘Seabiscuit’ - it’s clearly all about rims, spokes, hubs and wheel building...

But sad to say, a correspondent pointed out that, amongst all those Aryan divers elegantly tumbling in slow motion, Leni Riefenstahl had found the space to fit the humble derailleur into ‘Olympia’ - her ground-breaking film of the 1936 Olympic Games - a film that just happened to be greatly admired by Adolf Hitler. The derailleur as Nazi propaganda - it’s an unexpected, unwelcome but undeniable brush with celebrity.
