André Darrigade, French, 1929 -
This card was issued in 1979 by Editions Rencontre as a part of their card based encyclopedia. It features André Darrigade, World Road Race Champion in 1959.
André Darrigade was a phenomenal sprinter who won the green jersey in both 1959 and 1961. During his career he won 22 stages of the Tour, a total that was not surpassed by a sprinter until Mark Cavendish in 2012. By way of a coincidence, André Darreigade won the Manx Classic in 1960.
In 1959 André Darrigade rode for the Helyett-Leroux team and used Simplex gears. There are few good photos - but I suspect he used a Simplex Juy 543 for his Worlds ride - although he is probably using the brand new Simplex Record 60 in the photo on this card (taken in 1960).
