Tern is a folding bike manufacturer founded in 2011 by Joshua Hon and Florence Shen. If those two names seem familiar, they are the son and wife of Dr David Hon, the founder of Dahon. There was, of course, no truth in the rumour that Tern was deliberately created to be a direct competitor of Dahon (how dare you even think it!) but it was hard to look at its launch products without feeling that you had seem something similar in a recent Dahon catalogue.

It all sounds like something out of an episode of Dallas, and God only knows what the chat was around the Hon family breakfast table - but suffice it to say that years of litigation followed... and people like to sing the praises of the family business model!

In terms of derailleurs, Tern initially used a derailleur called the Tern Neos, which was essentially a Dahon Neos with no branding on it except a very discreet SR SUNTOUR logo. SR SUNTOUR manufactured this fine object for both companies.
