Illustrated London News

The Illustrated London News holds a a special place in publishing history. Launched in 1842, it was the first illustrated weekly news magazine. It set a pattern that was followed by many famous publications; Life, Paris Match, the British Sunday Supplements ... etc. etc. In many ways the illustrated weekly news magazine had a defining influence on the culture of the 20th century.

Just as the Illustrated London News foretold the rise of this format - it also foretold its death. By 1970 the title was on its knees and it ceased pulshing in 2003. I certainly remember it as a quaint, outdated, publication, most often found in dentist's waitng rooms.
