Campagnolo - 1992 Road Range

Campagnolo - 1992 Road Range scan 01 main image

This catalogue dates from September 1991. By the 1992 model year the onslaught of the mountain bike had decimated the road bike market - at one point, in the UK, road bikes accounted for less than 10% of sales. Italy would not have suffered as badly - but in the USA the situation might well have been even worse. Campagnolo responded by slimming their range down to just three models.

A summary of the changes since the Campagnolo - Anaheim 1990 catalogue might be:

  • The Record derailleur is extensively updated with an entirely new design with a hidden bolt at the p-pivot (something Shimano had introduced with the Shimano Santé back in 1987). It is shown with a style of cable clamp bolt that I have never seen in reality.
  • C-Record is finally put out of its misery, even in the luscious Century finish.
  • Croce d'Aune is also killed off.
  • Chorus is tidied up getting the new 'flat' cable adjusters and losing the spring tension screw at the p-pivot.
  • Athena becomes 8 speed and, not before time, gets the slant parallelogram geometry of Chorus - albeit with steel pulley cage plates.
  • Xenon is deleted.

So the road rear derailleur range is:

All 8-speed

  • Campagnolo Record (RD-01RE)*
  • Campagnolo Chorus (RD-01CH)*
  • Campagnolo Athena (RD-01AT)*

*New models for the 1992 model year.
